Condon Charts Flashcards
Protein synthesis steps
TRANSCRIPTION
STEP 1: DNA is separated by an enzyme
STEP 2: RNA is synthesized in the nucleolus
STEP 3: The mRNA matches up with the Template DNA and is coded based on base pairing rules
STEP 4: mRNA pairs and is copied until it reaches the terminator code (STOP codon)
TRANSLATION
STEP 5: mRNA leaves the nucleus and travels through the cytoplasm to the ribosome
STEP 6: mRNA separates into codons (3 nitrogen bases)
STEP 7: mRNA threads itself through the ribosome (between the large and small subunits)
STEP 8: tRNA lands on mRNA and generates an anticodon
STEP 9: tRNA goes into the cytoplasm and retrieves the correct amino acid
STEP 10: Amino Acid hooks onto the tRNA and is drug back to the ribosome where they are attached to the ribosome or previous amino acid
STEP 11: tRNAs continue to retrieve amino acids until it reaches the stop codon
STEP 12: Amino Acids are bound together with peptide bonds and released
STEP 13: The protein is released
