Conditions of the Thigh Flashcards
What are the two MOIs for the thigh?
- Direct blow (contusions/fractures)
- overuse/overstretch
Thigh contusions
*mostly anterior
MOI: direct blow
S/S: pain over area, loss of fxn (3rd degree akin to 3rd degree strain)
Treatment: pad before RTS, PIER in lengthened position to maintain ROM and mitigate bleeding)
What is a complication of contusions?
the blood can ossify if it does not move and bone spurs can form in the muscle belly. Complications increase if contusions happen in the same spot
Hamstring Strains
MOI: forceful eccentrics (running, jumping), lack of warm-up. Biceps femoris more common than semi-tendinosus and semi-membranosus (bi-articulate, larger muscle belly)
S/S: AROM: self-limiting, painful flxn. PROM: pain w stretching. RROM: Pain, weakness
Treatment: PIER in shortened position, gentle rehab that becomes sport-specific the longer it goes on
Quadriceps Strains
MOI: running downhill
S/S: pain over area, divot is severe, bruising
Treatment: as per hamstring. pressure is best within first 10 mins to assist w platelet plug
Adductor Strains
MOI: pushing off planted foot (hockey), pectineus most commonly injured b/c it does flxn + adduction, so extension + abduction stretches it
