Conditions In The Trenches Flashcards
What was the problem with the dry biscuits given to soldiers
They had to be soaked in water before they were edible.
What was wrong with the water that men in the trenches were given
It sometimes tasted like petrol as it was brought to them in empty petrol containers.
When it snowed they melted down the snow to make water but men died where the snow fell so some of the water contained bits of dead soldiers
What was done to stop the spread of disease
Daily medical checks were put in place
Why did disease spread so quickly
Men were crammed together in small trenches.
There was a lack of water for them to get washed as well
What was the worst part about lice
They were very hard to get rid of
What was trench foot
It was when men’s feet would swell to almost twice their normal size and start to go numb
How was trench foot caused
By men standing in flooded trenches and mud all day
Why was trench foot such a problem
Over 20000 men in the British army were infected
Why were rats such a problem
The rats are everything from the soldiers food to actual dead soldiers. This made them grow almost 3 times the size as a normal rat.
What was shell shock
A mental illness developed in the trenches by the constant noise and seeing their friends dying.
What condition did the soldiers in the trenches suffer from that today we call PTSD
