Conditions For Student Of Knowledge Flashcards

1
Q

What 2 main qualities does Allah سبحانه و تعالى describe the people of knowledge as possessing? Give an ayah for each
Mention what is interesting about the sequence of these verses

A

1- grounded in knowledge

It is He who has sent down to you, [O Muḥammad], the Book; in it are verses [that are] precise - they are the foundation of the Book - and others unspecific.[[Those which are stated in such a way that they are open to more than one interpretation or whose meaning is known only to Allāh, such as the opening letters of certain sūrahs.]] As for those in whose hearts is deviation [from truth], they will follow that of it which is unspecific, seeking discord and seeking an interpretation [suitable to them]. And no one knows its [true] interpretation except Allāh. But those firm in knowledge say, We believe in it. All [of it] is from our Lord. And no one will be reminded except those of understanding.

Āli-ʿImrān, Ayah 7

  • There are two ways of saying this ayah:
  • ** Stop after Allah**, only He knows the true interpretation and the people of knowledge say they believe
  • ** Continue after Allah**, He and those of knowledge know the meanings of the vague verses

2- Rabbani (acting on and nurturing others)

It is not for a human [prophet][[Or any believer.]] that Allāh should give him the Scripture[[Or in the case of Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ), the Book (i.e., the Qur’ān) .]] and authority and prophethood and then he would say to the people, Be servants to me rather than Allāh, but [instead, he would say], Be pious scholars of the Lord because of what you have taught of the Scripture and because of what you have studied.

Āli-ʿImrān, Ayah 79

Allah سبحانه وتعالى mentions that it’s not possible for someone to be given the Quran and sunnah and then tell the people to worship them - it’s not possible for Allah سبحانه وتعالى , to choose a prophet and then for them to say this. He سبحانه وتعالى would only choose someone who’d call to His way and
be devoted to worshipping Him alone according to the scripture and what was taught.

Sequence of verses
الرسوخ is mentioned at the beginning of the surah while الرباني is mentioned towards the end. So, to be الرباني, one must first be رسوخ. You must first be grounded in knowledge in order to teach others.

“Verily, Allah does not withhold knowledge by snatching it away from His servants, but rather He withholds knowledge by taking the souls of scholars, until no scholar remains and people follow ignorant leaders. Knowledge is only a gift which is bestowed by Allah سبحانه وتعالى to those He loves from His creation. No one received this through lineage. If it was received due to lineage then the first people for it would be the family of the prophet

41
Q

What did Al-Askari mention that Abul Hassan al-Karkhi said regarding his habit of attending lessons?

Why did he do this- based on what line of poetry? Explain this

A

That he would attend the place of sitting of the lesson of Abi Hazim on Friday when there was no class, just so he could become accustomed to attending.

Based on this line of poetry:

“The soul is like a child, if it is left it will grow upon
love of breast feeding and if it is weaned it will come off it”

• The child must be disciplined though weaning, the same goes for the soul. If it is left alone, it will follow its desires (like a child and breast feeding) and turn in every direction. We must steer the soul and know when to say ‘No’

42
Q

Give 3 examples of what the salaf did which links with this line of poetry:
What is the translation and meaning?

A

Line of poetry:

“The soul is like a child, if it is left it will grow upon
love of breast feeding and if it is weaned it will come off it”
• The child must be disciplined though weaning, the same goes for the soul. If it is left alone, it will follow its desires (like a child and breast feeding) and turn in every direction. We must steer the soul and know when to say ‘No’

It was mentioned that Hassan al-Basri رحمه الله wanted to pray but his body wouldn’t let him, so he stayed up the whole night, depriving his body of sleep as it deprived him of salah.
- control your body and soul, not the other way around - If you do not have control over yourself, how do you expect to have control over others

Al- Askari mentioned that Abul Hassan al-Karkhi رحمهما الله said: he would attend the lesson of Abu Hazim رحمه الله on Friday when there was no class so that he’d become accustomed to attending.

Wahb ibn Jarir رحمه الله narrated from his father that he would sit in the lessons of Hassan رحمه الله for 7 years and that even if he fasted he would still go.
- don’t be lazy when you fast, in fact, be more productive

Qatadah رحمه الله was a student of Anas ibn Malik رضي الله عنه who would never miss a class. One day the teacher came late so Qatadah sat at the front of the class and went over the previous lesson.
Anas ibn Malik رضي الله عنه saw this and said you have taken all my knowledge
- only one with consistency will reap the benefits

43
Q

Give a line of poetry that links to the need to seek knowledge and not neglect it

A

If you do not plant and sow a reaper
You will regret over this negligence on the day of harvest

44
Q

Ahmad ibn Sin’an mentioned about the gathering of A’bd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi رحمهما الله …(relating to how student etiquette was expected to be)

A

In Abd al-Rahman’s gathering, no one spoke, no pen was sharpened, no one smiled, and no one stood up. It was as if there were birds on their heads or as if they were praying. If he saw one of them, he smiled or spoke, he put on his shoes and went out.

45
Q

What 2 characteristics did Bukhari mention prevented the attaining of knowledge?

A

Shyness and Arrogance
