Future Less Vivid Conditions
If x should happen. then y would happen
present subjunctive is used in both the protasis and apodosis
Present Contrary to Fact Conditions
If x were happening (but it’s not). then y would happen
imperfect subjunctive is used in both the protasis and apodosis
Past Contrary to Fact Conditions
If x had happened (but it didn’t), y would have happened
pluperfect subjunctive is used in both the protasis and apodosis
