Condensed Lewis Diagrams and Constitutional Isomers Flashcards
What does the formation of an ionic compound require?
A large (negative) enough lattice enthalpy to compensate for ionization energy and electron affinity, and still lower the potential energy of the system
What is the difference between molecular formulas and condensed formulas?
Molecular formulas do not provide information about atom-to-atom connectivity.
When is a parantheses used in a condensed formula?
- Similar adjacent groups of atoms with a subscript showing their numbers
- Used to show a branched group
What is a heteroatom?
Any atom other than carbon or hydrogen
What do all compounds contain in this scenario?
Oxygen is always double bonded to carbon
What are isomers?
Compounds that have the same molecular formula
What are constitutional isomers?
Same molecular formula, but different atom-to-atom connectivity
What are the three ways constitutional isomers can differ?
- type of functional group
- position of functional group
- the skeleton
