'Concpets' Flashcards
concept
mental representation of classes of things [allows for us to make sense of the world]
exemplar
specific ‘dog’ from that category
prototype
capture the central tendency of a category
prototype theory
concepts are represented by a ‘categorical prototype’
- if you see children, you generate an idea to match to parent
exemplar theory
subjects do not form an abstract ‘prototype’ for each category - individual exemplars stored in memory
different levels of categorization [3]
basic (dog)
general: superordinate (mammal)
specific: subordinate (spaniel)
what makes ‘basic’ so unique?
balance the trade off between informativeness and distinctness
typicality
how much ‘they’ resemble the prototype
objects high in typicality
‘better’ members of the category, than objects further from prototype (more acknowledge/ used)
