What is Concerto Grosso?
An important form of orchestral music in which a small group of soloists is pitted against a larger group of players. The work usually includes several movements of contrasting nature.
What is Concertino?
The smaller group of soloists (usually 2-4) used in a concerto grosso. They were the best and highest paid members of the Baroque orchestra.
What is Ripieno?
the larger group of players (8-20) involved in the concerto grosso, mainly comprised of string instruments.
What is Ritornello Form?
the form usually used for the first and last movements of a concerto grosso. It features the alternation between solo and ripieno sections.
What is Ritornello?
The refrain played by the ripieno which occurs in its entirety at the beginning and end of the movement with fragmented statements in different keys in between.
What is Basso Continuo(thorough bass)?
the continuous bass line used in Baroque music played by the harpsichord (organ) and cello (or doublebass or bassoon)
What is figure bass?
Harpsichord fills in the chords where numbers are indicated.
