Conceptual Modelling Flashcards
Definition
The activity that elicits and descibes the general knowledge a particular information system needs to know.
Focus on “general” knowledge (university -> students)
“Elicit”: we’ve done this through data requirement analysis
“Describe” - mechanism
Conceptual Schema
The output of the process ; making the choice explicit (the conceptual modelling process)
General Knowledge
A domain consists of the objects and the relationships among them.
Instance Of
Entities and relationships are instances of concepts
Maria being part of module of 111 is an instance of an overall registering class
Ontological Commitment
Assume that the world is made up of objects and their relationships
Important
Did not look at how classification (specific detail, “Maria Kimura is a student”) is going to look like once implemented.
This is the basics; we know a person has an age and a name, but we do not assign them to classes like a database just yet.
