Why was the development of the printing press so important?

A

It was important because it made books easier to make, so they could be sold cheaper, and more people could afford to buy these books. This also helped to spread new ideas not just in the highest classes. People began to become more literate and books were printed in the vernacular. The selling of books also funded the travels of thinkers to go and teach others.

A

The Aztecs settled on a small island in the middle of lake Texcoco in the Valley of Mexico. The wandering group of nomads chose this spot because they were told by their gods to make a settlement where a eagle perched on a cactus eating a snake was.

What were the changes that the Aztecs made to the geography of Tenochtitlan?

A

The Aztecs built chinampas, they built dams to stop flash floods from accruing, they built causeways leading to land that could be easily destroyed when attacked, and the also built aqueducts to get fresh water from springs in the mountains.

What occurred during the Meiji era?

A

The government emphasized the importance the Emperor, and its goals were to create a strong central government that could unite the country, and to create a government closer to that of the west. Daimyo lost power, the samurai system was abolished and class distinctions were taken out of Japan. Everyone could pursue any job they wished.

How did geography affect Japanese culture?

A

Japan was isolated from all of the other countries, and so had little contact with them and had to become self sufficient for they could not trade. The Japanese people felt that they were protected by the gods because when the mongols attacked Japan, they were turned away by a storm. Since Japan was close to China, it adopted some of its religion and writing style. The Cherry blossoms that cover Japan represent new beginnings, beauty, and the shortness of life and beauty. Since Japan was bombarded with natural disasters, the people had to learn to become stoic.

A

They passed these laws to make sure that Japanese people would be loyal only to him, and that his power would not be threatened.

Why was Japan able to industrialize so quickly?

A

Japan was able to industrialize so quickly because it was small, and ideas could be passed around speedily, Japaan needed to catch up with the other countries so it could be seen as a power. The government of Japan built factories and sold them to the Japanese for very cheap prices so they could start businesses, and Japan hired professionals from all over the world to come and teach the Japanese people. They were also able to adapt and rebuild easily.

What was the Edo period?

A

The Edo period was the time that the shogun was in power. Japan was isolated for much of this time, and order was maintained. Japan had a booming economy during this time and many laws were put into place to maintain order. It was a homogeneous society.

A

Spanish would either kill them or use them as slaves. The Aztecs would sacrifice them.
