Concepts in Changing Spaces Flashcards
Space
This is the distance that separates places, with its own features. Space can be both real and perceived, and may be influenced by fast transport. Space does not have meaning like places do.
Place
An area with objective (e.g map coordinates) and subjective meaning (Downing Street - Political power symbol). Places are diverse and unique, influenced by historical and modern interactions with people or other places.
=> Thus ‘power geometries’ impact different people in different ways, and can impact the depiction of places and the flows in and out.
Place Characteristics
These include demographics, socio-economic, cultural, political, built environment, and the natural environment.
Place profile
Place characteristics grouped under different categories: demographic profile, socio-economic profile, cultural profile.
Place Representation (Formal V Informal)

=> Informal representations are produced by individuals and small groups, outside formal sector institutions. They are often creative.

Emotional Attachment to Place
What the place means to an individual / group of people who know the place well, or had a significant experience in the place.
Sense of Place
Subjective and emotional attachment to a place, developed through experience and knowledge. Similar to perception but more emphasis on attachment.
Group Place Meaning
