How much alcohol causes cirrhosis? In women? Men?
Women - 2-3 drinks daily for a minimum of 10 years.
Men - six drinks daily for 10 years.
Not candidates for liver transplant
Severe cardiovascular instability with advanced cardiac disease

Inability to follow instructions regarding drug therapy and self managment
Post op for liver transplant patient
Monitor for liver rejection, infection, systemic organ failure, pneumonia
Treatment of skin irritation and pruritus with jaundice in Cirrhosis Patients
Teach the patient to use COOL rather than warm water on skin and to NOT use excessive amount of soap. Teach UAP to use lotion to soothe the skin. Skin areas can become infected from scratching.
Parcentesis
Insertion of a tracer catheter (by physician) or drain into abdomen to remove ascitic fluid from peritoneal cavity. Ultrasound is used for added safety.
Patient Safety Practices for Paracentesis
Explain procedure, Obtain vitals (including weight), void before procedure to prevent bladder injury, Head of bed elevated, measure drainage, send fluid to lab, apply dressing to site after procedure, maintain bedrest.
Most important intervention for patient with hepatopulmonary syndrome
Monitor oxygen saturation with pulse ox, elevate head to 30, Elevate feet to decrease ankle edema and relieve dyspnea, weigh patient daily.
Nutrition Therapy for Cirrhosis Patient
Low-sodium diet; eat small, frequent meals that are nutritional; Ensure (supplemental liquid) and a multivitamin.
Which drugs should Cirrhosis Patients avoid?
Acetaminophen, alcohol, and illicit drugs. By avoiding, patient prevents further fibrosis of liver, allow liver to heal
