Q
exposition versus exegesis
A
There are two kinds of commentaries: Expositional and Exegetical.
Expositional (e.g., MacArthur’s NT Commentaries) focus on background and overview, sometimes word studies or important syntactical issues, but they are almost always focused on explaining the meaning in a teaching fashion, not on identifying interpretative options and strengths and weaknesses that are associated with them.
Exegetical commentaries are focused on identifying the different interpretive options and explaining what the strengths for each are. They are more likely to focus on the Hebrew and Greek text as they discuss important issues within the biblical texts.
