At what stage is the Germinal stage?
0 to 2 weeks, this is at conception.
What stage is the Embryonic stage?
The embryonic stage occurs at 3 to 8 weeks, this is when the organs develop.
When is the fetal stage?
The fetal stage is 9 weeks up until Birth, this is where the rest of the development takes place.
What happens in the Germinal stage?
- fertilised egg is not yet planted
- the call divides into a zygote
- near the end of the 2 weeks the zygote will plant in the uterus lining

What happens in the embryonic stage?
- the tissues differentiate for when they become organs
- hard wired reflexes
- the umbilical cord is providing oxygen and nutrients to the embryo
Critical period of pregnancy
Up to 8 to 12 weeks
What happens at the fetal stage?
- 8 weeks and up
- 12 weeks gender can be identified
- 16 weeks movement can be felt
- 7month the child can libe outside the womb with correct supporr
What is a terotogen?
A terotogen is toxins that has impacts upon development.
Eg. Smoking or alcohol.

Birth process:
- Dilation: early labour or active labour
- Fetus enters birth canal
- Contractions
Birthing options:
- Lamaze
- Leboyer
- Home birth
- Lamaze is based on focus, breathing and relaxation
- Leboyer is based on a home like atmosphere, still attached to the umbilical cord but placed on chest
- Home birth with a professional present
What tests are done at birth?
- APGAR Test
- Reflex’s
- Hearing and sight
