concept of hazards Flashcards
what is a hazard?
it is a potential to cause loss of:life, property, economic activity and environment.
what is a disaster?
A disaster occurs as a result of a hazard.
what are the three categories of natural disaster?
Geophysical
Atmospheric
Hydrological
how is a geophysical disaster distinguished?
if it is driven by earths own internal energy sources.
what are a few examples of geophysical disasters?
plate tectonics,volcanoes, seismic activity.
how is a atmospheric disaster distinguished?
if it is driven by processes at work in the atmosphere.
what are a few example of atmospheric disasters?
tropical storms and droughts.
how is a hydrological disaster distinguished?
if it is driven by water bodies , mainly the ocean.
what are a few examples of hydrological disasters?
floods, storm surges, tsunamis
what are the three types of hazard perception?
Acceptance
Domination
Adaptation
what are the key points to a acceptance view on hazards?
fatalistic tendencies. natural events that are a part of life.”acts of life”.cant be controlled by humans and are random.LOSS OF LIFE EXPECTED.
what are the key points to a domination view on hazards?
perception is tat hazards are extreme events.they are predictable, magnitude can be predicted.we can understand them .control of hazards is also possible through engineering or use of technology.
what are the key points to a adaption view on hazard?
the perception is a mix of domination and acceptance.natural hazards will happen. they are influenced by both natural and human factors .magnitude and frequency may be predicted. new technology’s to help mitigate hazards.
what are human responses to natural disasters?
fatalism
prediction
adjustment/adaptation
mitigation
what are the features of a fatalistic response?
people accept that there will be a risk but choose to do little prior. the response will be reactive but even will have lead to large loss of life. often a response for LICs or developing countries.
