Concept of Energy: Heat and Work Flashcards
Heat (Q)
form of energy transferred from one body to another by virtue of a temperature difference
Work (W)
form of energy that results in the motion of a body by virtue of an opposing force
Molecular Mechanism of Heat and Work Transfer
a. Transfer of energy as heat- uses random motion or thermal motion of molecules
b. Transfer of energy as work- uses orderly molecular motion, when work is done by the system to its surroundings, atoms or molecules in the surroundings move in an organized way.
External Energy
refers to the energy of the system as a bulk which can be associated with the velocity and location of its center of mass.
Kinetic Energy
energy due to the translational motion of the system relative to some point of reference.
Potential Energy
Energy due to the position of the system in a potential field such as electromagnetic or gravitational field.
Mechanical forms of work
A. Shaft work
B. Spring work
C. Surface tension work
