Concept I Meninges and Ventricles Flashcards
3 layers of meninges on spinal cord?
Pia mater (surface of spinal cord and roots of spinal nerves) Arachnoid mater (avascular) Dura mater (tough, fibrous outer layer)
What is the tubular sheeth that contains the spinal cord called?
Dural sac
Where is extradural (epidural) space?
Between dura and vertebrae
Where is subarachnoid space?
Under arachnoid layer
What does the subarachnoid space hold?
Cerebral spinal fluid
The dura mater and arachnoid mater directly touch. True or false?
True
What are the tethers that the pia mater forms?
Denticulate ligaments
What do denticulate ligaments do?
Help suspend spinal cord in Dural sac
What is the definition of spina bifida?
Failure of fusion of one or more vertebral arch
What are the two types of spina bifida?
Cystica
Occulta
What is cystica?
Severe abnormality when 1 or more vertebral arches fail to develop and a cyst (of variable content) forms.
What are two subtypes of cystica?
Meningocele
Myelomeningocele
What is meningocele?
Herniation of meninges
What is myelomeningocele?
Herniation of both meninges and spinal cord/ nerve roots
What happens with occulta?
No cyst. Incomplete vertebral arch. Usually L5 or S1 fail to form. Tuft of hair.
Which layer of mater tethers the spinal cord?
Pia mater
What area of spinal cord contains CSF?
Subarachnoid space
Which area of spinal cord contains fat?
Epidural or extradural
What pia mater suspends the spinal cord in Dural sac?
Denticulate ligaments
Which two mater is right up against each other to form dura?
Arachnoid mater and dura mater
Which two layers make up the cranial dura mater?
Periosteal layer
Meningeal layer
What is Falx cerebri, Falx cerebellum and tentorium cerebri made up of?
Dura mater
What are the areas between periosteal layer and meningeal layer called?
Dural venous sinuses
What are Dural venous sinuses lined with?
Endothelium
Simple squamous epithelium
