Concept 2: The Outer Planets Flashcards
Explain how the characteristics of the outer planets are similar and different
They are large, gaseous planets, are very cold at their surfaces, have ring systems and many satellites made of lightweight elements.
Explain how moons and rings form
Space debris and rocks that are pulled in by a magnetic field
Compare the composition of the gas giants and the Sun.. (2)
Jupiter and Saturn (and other gas giants) have similar composition to the sun. Made mostly of hydrogen and helium.
gas giant
large, gaseous planets that are very cold at their surfaces
Belt
are low, warm, dark-colored clouds that sink. On Jupiter
zone
are high, cool, light colored clouds that rise
On Jupiter
liquid metallic hydrogen
a form of hydrogen that has properties of both a liquid and a metal which can exist only under conditions of high pressure.
