Concept 2 Flashcards
What’s a physical property?
Properties that can be observed directly or measured without changing the chemical compound
What’s melting point?
Temp at which a solid becomes a liquid
What’s boiling point?
Temp at which liquid becomes a gas
What’s viscosity?
A fluids resistance to flow
What’s solubility?
A measure of how well a solute dissolves in a solvent
What’s a solute?
What is being dissolved
What’s a solvent?
What is doing the dissolving
What’s a solution?
The result
What is density?
Measure of compactness or consistency of a material
What is a chemical property?
Properties that can only be observed or measured by changing the chemical identity of a substance
What’s combustibility?
How easily a substance will set on fire
What’s reactivity?
How easily a substance reacts, usually with an acid or base
What’s oxidation?
How easily a substance reacts with oxygen
What’s physical change?
A change in a substance that only effects it’s physical properties
What’s chemical change?
A change in the substance that effects its chemical properties thus a chemical reaction occurs and a new substance is formed
What’s a chemical reaction?
Process by which the atoms of one or more substances are rearranged to form different substances
What’s law of conservation of matter?
Matter is neither destroyed or created, only changes forms
What’s evidence of a chemical change?
Release of light, temp change, odor change, sudden change of color, gas given off, sudden appearance of a solid
