Concept 1 Flashcards
What are the characteristics of life?
-Composed of one or more cells
-Contains RNA or DNA
-Be capable of growing
-Be capable of reproduction
-Demonstrate the ability to respond to outside stimuli homeostasis
-Be able to adapt and evolve as a population
-Have metabolism, consume energy and produce waste
What are the three principles of the cell theory?
-All living things are made of cells
-Cells are the basic unit of life
-All cells come from other cells
What are the structures that distinguish plant cells from animal cells?
-Central Vacuole
-Chloroplasts
-Cell Wall
What does the cell membrane do?
Controls what goes in and out of the cell
Want does the Cytoskeleton do?
It gives shape to the cell and can also move organelles around.
What does Cytoplasm do?
It holds everything in place
What does the Nucleus do?
It protects DNA in the cell
What does the Nucleolus do?
It makes RNA, which make up ribosomes
What do Ribosomes do?
Make protein
What does Rough ER do?
Helps make proteins and packages them up for secretion
What does Smooth ER do?
Makes lipids (which make up the cell membrane)
What organelles help Ribosomes in its function?
Nucleus, Nucleolus, Golgi apparatus, Rough ER, and the cell membrane
What is metabolism?
What is diversity?
Scope of variation among living organisms
What is Unicellular?
Composed of one cell
What is Multicellular?
Made up of more than one cell that ay organize into tissues, organs, and organ systems.
What is an organelle?
Specialized strutures within the cell that work together to help the cell function
