Q

what is crenation in animal cells? why does it happen?

A

It’s when the water goes out of the concentrated solution and therefore shrivels. This happens because there isn’t enough water to hydrate the cell.

Q

what is lysis in animal cells? why does it happen?

A

It is when a dilute solution takes in water and therefore burst. This is because the animal cell cannot hold that much water.

Q

what happens when water enters a plant cell? why?

A

The water moves into the plant cell by osmosis. The turgor pressure makes the cell hard and turgid (rigid). The plant cell gets full but never burst due to it’s cell wall holding it together.

Q

what happens when water leaves a plant cell? why?

A

The cells become flaccid (soft) as there is no pressure on the walls. The plant them wilts as there is no turgor to support plant tissues.
