Q

What type of restorations are used a lot in dentistry?

A

Resin-based - either “directly” placed by a clinican or “indirectly” where the restoration is made in the laboratory.

Q

Why is resin used in dentistry?

A

-Type of synthetic material composed of plastic and glass particles.

-Can be molded and shaped to match the natural shape and colour of teeth.

-Commonly used in restorative/cosmetic dentistry to fill cavities, repair and improve the appearance of teeth.

-Also used to create veeners.

Q

Why can’t composite resin adhere to the tooth structure unless there has been prior preparation?

A

It is hydrophobic

Q

How can we bond the resin restorative material to the tooth structure?

A

Either by phosphoric acid etching and/or an adhesive.

6
Q

Why is dentine difficult to adhere to?

A

Because it contains fluids.

As its difficult for the substrate to adhere to the dentine, the substrate needs “priming”.

Q

What adhesive is used at kings?

A
  • Single-step self etching adhesive “scotchbond Universal”
  1. Selectively enamel etch first.
  2. Scrub on adhesive all over area to be restored.
3.Then light cure after 30 secs of scurbbing.

Q

What does the process of enamel etching involve?

A

Discrete etching of the enamel

-In order to provide selective dissolution of prism cores or peripheries

-Into which resin can flow and be polymerized to form a mechanical bond to enamel

Q

why do dentists gove patients fissure sealants?

A

Adhesion technique for fissure sealant involves acid etching the occlusal fissure with phosphoric acid then placing a small amount of fissure sealant and light-curing.

The aim is to reduce the depth of the deep fissure and make the easier to clean, less plaque retentive and therefore less prone to caries.

Q

Why do fissure sealants not need an adhesive?

A

-Fissure sealants have very low viscosity

-They can enter etched enamel prismatic spaces

BUT can increase their bonding performance to enamel by adhesive placement after phosphoric acid ethcing
