CON-B tutorial 12: important factors to consider when placing direct composite resin restorations Flashcards
If caries is deep and the pulp may be stressed, what should we place?
Provisional restorative material i.e glass ionomer/calciu silicate cement
This can help re-mineralise the dentine and encourage pulpal healing.
What is dentine hybridisation?
Resin materials infiltrate and bond with exposed collagen network WITHIN the dentine
-Creating a hybrid layer
-Hybrid layer enhances bond strength between the tooth structure and the restorative material.
What is enamel resin tag formation?
-Resin material penetrates the etched enamel surface.
-Etched enamel = micropores/roughened surface allows resin to seep through creating resin tags.
-Establishes strong mechanical bond between enamel and resin

What do we need for good dentine bonding?
-Dissolved smear layer
-High quality hybrid layer
What is MDP?
-10-Methhacryloyloxydecyl Dihydrogen Phosphate
-Has affinity for hydroxyapatite. When applied, MDP forms chemical bonds with Ca2+ in the tooth structure, leading to a durable bond.
-Has a hydrophillic group- allows it to interact with dentine
-Hydrophobic group - allows it to interact with resin.
Why is the addition of an intermediate flowable composite layer a good idea?
-Increased adhesion for all tested materials
-good for small cavities
Why is it crucial that the correct flowable composite is used?
Flowable composite can reduce gap formation if it has high elastic modulus.
What technique should you use when placing a conventional composite?
Incremental filling technique
WITH GOOD MOISTURE CONTROL
Why is it important to use incremental filling?
-Less shrinkage
-Stronger bonding to the cavity floor
What can a CR with higher diffuse transmission result in
Superior shade bledning in the margin, without bevels
