Computing (05.04.22) Flashcards
What is a network?
A network is two or more computers that are connected together
What is a server?
A server is a powerful computer that often acts as a central hub
Each computer is connected to a server called…
client
What is a standalone computer?
A computer that is not connected to a network
What are the benefits of a network? (examples)
Hardware (printer)
Software (multiple users run same program in different computers)
Data (getting access to shared work)
What are protocols and it’s function?
Protocols are a set of rules that the internet uses.
To send and receive information in a standard way, regardless of the language used.
Problems with a network:
If the network breaks, the tasks we use the computer for will be useless
We can expose ourselves to hackers and viruses.
What is the name of the huge network we use daily? (hint: the biggest WAN we know)
The INTERNET
There are two types of network: (Names)
a Local Area Network (LAN)
a Wide Area Network (WAN)
What is a Local Area Network? (examples)
Is when computers or devices are connected together over a small geographical area.
E.g : A home, a building or one site
What is a Wide Area Network? (examples)
Is when computers or devices are connected together over a large geographical area.
E.g : a company office in London and another in Beijing would use WAN to allow the employees to share a network
What is a Topology?
A topology is the layout/pattern of the way a network is connected
How many topologies are they? (names)
3 topologies
Bus (three lines on top and three on bottom)
Ring (circle with six dots)
Star (one in the center and the 5 left making a star)
What are the signals media is carried on?
Copper cable
Fibre Optic Cable
Wireless
What does Boolean logic mean?
It means that there are two possible outcomes. (TRUE OR FALSE)
