computers Flashcards
What is a computer?
A computer is a machine that processes data.
What is the purpose of a computer?
The purpose of a computer is to take data, process it and then output it. Computers were created to help process data and complete tasks more efficiently than humans.
What is a computer system?
A computer system consists of hardware and software that work together to process data and complete tasks.
What is hardware? +examples
Hardware is the physical stuff that makes up a computer system, like the CPU, motherboard, monitor and printer.
What is software? +examples
Software is the programs or applications that a computer system runs e.g an operating system, a word processor or video game.
What are peripherals?
They are external pieces of hardware like the keyboard, mouse and printers.
What are different examples of computer systems?
Calculators, watches, supercomputers.
What is general purpose?
Computers may be general purpose- designed to perform many tasks e.g PCs and tablets.
What are dedicated systems?
Computers may also be designed for dedicated systems- designed for one particular function e.g controlling traffic lights on an aeroplane.
What are embedded systems?
Embedded systems are computers built into other devices, like dishwashers, microwaves and TVs.
Are embedded systems for general purpose or are they dedicated systems?
Usually dedicated systems
What do embedded systems do? What is their function?
Embedded systems are often used as control systems- they monitor and control machinery in order to achieve a desired result.
Explain an example of an embedded system and include how it works?
In a dishwasher the embedded system could control the water pumps and water release mechanisms, manage the various dishwasher cycles and control the thermostat to keep the water at an appropriate temperature.
Advantages of embedded systems?
As they are dedicated to a single task, embedded systems are usually easier to design, cheaper to produce and more efficient at doing their task than a general purpose computer.
