Computer systems Flashcards
What is a computer?
A machine that processes data.
What is the purpose of a computer?
The purpose is to take data, process it, then output it.
Why were computers created?
To help process data and complete tasks more efficiently than humans.
What does a computer system consist of?
A computer system consists of hardware and software.
What does hardware and software do?
They work together to process data/complete tasks.
What is hardware?
The physical stuff that makes up the computer system, CPU, motherboard, monitor and printer.
What is software?
The programs or applications that a computer system runs.
What is a dedicated system?
A system that is designed for one particular function.
What are embedded systems?
Computers built into other devices (larger systems).
What are embedded systems used for?
Often used as control systems.
What do embedded systems do?
They monitor and control machinery to achieve a desired result.
What are embedded systems dedicated to?
They’re dedicated to a single task; embedded systems are usually easier to design, cheaper to produce and more efficient at doing their task than a general purpose computer.
What do computers contain that work together?
Components.
