Computer system Flashcards
basic operational design of a computer
architecture
a pioneer in computer design is given credit for the architecture
Jon Von Nueumann
three components of architecture
- CPU
- Input devices
- Output devices
physical part of the computer
hardware
used to enter data
input devices
used to view and hear processed data
output devices
brain of computer
central processing unit
three components of cpu
- arithmetic logic unit (number crunching)
- registers (similar to memory but has special purposes)
- control unit (manages instructions)
storage area in which program instruction (code) reside during execution
primary memory
is permanent and remains when power is off
read only memory
is temporary storage area for program instructions and data that is being processed
random access memory
provides space to retain data in an area separate from the computer’s memory after computer is turned off. examples are floppy disks, hard disk drives
secondary memory
combination of ID and OD that allows communication and electronic transfer of information between computers
network
largest and most expensive computer that can perform billions of instructions
super computer
large computers that support organizational functions and can perform millions of instructions
mainframes
