Computer Science Flashcards
What is a LAN?
LAN is a Local Area Network over a small geographical area
What is a WAN?
WAN is a Wide Area Network over different geographical locations
You have recently had an Internet connection put into your home so that you can connect your PC, tablet, mobile phone and game consoles to share The Internet and also photos/videos from these devices. LAN or WAN?

What is a client-server?
A client-server network is a network managed by a server. Files and software are usually stored on the server and all requests go through the server. Most uses of the internet work on client-server relationships.
What is a peer-to-peer network?
In peer-to-peer (P2P) all devices connect directly to each other. You can store files on different individual devices. You usually use them at home, for example a network with a printer.
Client-server network pros
- Easy to keep track of files (stored centrally)
- Easy back ups
- Easier updates
- Easier security management
- Reliable
Peer-to-peer pros
- Easy to maintain
- No dependence on server (one device fails, all is not lost)
Client-server network cons
- Expensive to set up and maintain
- Server dependence
- Can’t have too many people depending on server specs
Peer-to-peer cons
- No centralised management (server)
- Easy to lose track
- Less reliable and more difficult backups
- Devices are prone to slow down
