Computer Networks Flashcards
What is a network?
Path of nodes and channels
What is bandwidth?
Theoretical capacity of channel
What is throughout?
Actual rate of delivery of channel
What is latency?
Delivery time for 1 byte
What are packets?
Logical group of bits transmitted through a network
What is circuit switching?
Connection make between 2 devices maintained until info stops being sent
How does circuit switching work?
Circuit established
Data transferred
Circuit disconnected
What is FDM?
Frequency division multiplexing
Electromagnetic spectrum divided into bands and each user assigned band
What is TDM?
Time division multiplexing
Time divided into slots and user allocated a slot
What is packet switching?
Data sent in small packets of bits and each packet has routing info
How does packet switching work?
User injects 1st packet into network
Goes to node which sends another node neared to destination
Done for many packets
What is the QOS for circuit and packet switching?
Circuit: same as QOS of route with worst connection
Packet: hard to determine because bandwidth and latency vary
What is a connection-oriented service?
Connection between end points is maintained
Circuit switching
What is a connectionless service?
No end to end connection maintained
Packet switching
What are routers?
Creates LAN from digital signal from MODEM
When MODEM gets info from internet, router distributes it to connected devices
