Computer Hardware Flashcards
What are Peripheral Devices
A peripheral device is a device that connects to the computer in some way to give a computer additional functionality
True or False: You need peripheral devices for your computer to run
False
Peripheral Devices can be 3 things list them
- output
- input
- external storage
Input does what
send info to the computer system
Output does what
Sends info out/from the computer system
External Data does what
stores data

List the three types of computer systems
- Desktop device
- mobile device
- server
define desktop device
Designed for use at a single location on or near a desk or table due to its size and power requirements
define mobile device
Any computing device designed principally for portability.
define server
its purpose is to manage network resources
list all the computer hardware components
-CPU – Central Processing Unit
-RAM – Random Access Memory
-HDD – Hard Disk Drive / SSD – Solid State Drive
-Motherboard
-PSU – Power supply Unit
define CPU & what is it measured in?
Central Processing Unit
- The CPU is known as the brain of the computer. The CPU is responsible for processing instructions.
Ghz – gigahertz
list and define the 3 components of a CPU
Control unit: directs or coordinates the operations of the processor.
Arithmetic logic unit (ALU): performs the arithmetic and logic operation for the CPU
Register: random access memory used by the processor for fast access to instructions or calculations
define RAM
RAM is Primary Memory
It is very fast memory, used for quick access.
It is Volatile (when the power is cut, all data on the RAM is wiped)
define HDD
It is Volatile (when the power is cut, all data on the RAM is wiped)
It is Non-Volatile (when the power is cut, data is NOT wiped)
define SSD
A SSD a type of mass storage device similar to a hard disk drive (HDD). (Secondary, Permanent storage)
define motherboard
The main circuit board of the computer.
All of the other hardware components attach to the motherboard.
define the PSU
The PSU supplies power to the computer
Define OS
An OS manages the computers software and hardware. It also allows the user to communicate with the computer.
fucntions of a OS
- Provision of User Interface
- Management of system resources
- Management of security and access rights
- Running system and user applications
