Computer and Technical Terms Flashcards
Color produced by the combination of Red, Green and Blue (RGB).
Additive Color
Blend techniques that smooth jagged edges of computer-generated type and graphics.
Anti-Aliasing
duplicate copy of computer files from the hard drive copied to a jump drive or external hard drive.
Backup
A curve used in drawing and illustration software programs such as Illustrator that provides control handles for manipulating and controlling the shape of curves.
Bezier Curve
In general, you use ______ programs for displaying and editing digitized images such as scanned photographs. ______ programs are based upon tiny individual picture elements called pixels that compose the image.
Bitmap
Acronym for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black used in the color separation of color photographs.
CMYK
A computer’s factory setting for tools and pallets.
Default
The number of resolution dots in one square inch of an image. The more _ , the higher the quality of the image.
Dots Per Inch Known as dpi.
An image description format used for storing object oriented or vector artwork. Such as those created in Illustrator. Fonts and image files need not be loaded as they are “encapsulated” into the ___ code. This format uses a large amount of disk space.
EPS Encapsulated PostScript.
GIF
Graphics Interchange Format. Used for web graphics.
This refers to black-and-white photographs or continuous tone images.
Grayscale Images
A computer drawing of a device or program symbol which is usually activated with a mouse or click, to access the device or run the program.
Icon
a file format with built in compression. Image quality is sacrificed to conserve disk space or file size. The more the image is compressed, the more sharpness and detail that is lost. This format has been dubbed the space saver. It can save you half as much disk space as a TIFF.
JPEG Joint Photographic Experts Group
list of program commands and functions displayed on the top most portion of a computer screen monitor.
Menu
A collection of computers that are interconnected, such as those found in student labs.
Network
PMS colors. A series of colored chips that have been assigned a specific number.
Pantone Matching System
Portable Document Format. A way of viewing, sharing and printing electronic documents. It is also a great way to save files headed to print. It can support and preserve all of Photoshop’s features.
Definable squares on a computer monitor used to form images on the screen. Screens with more ______ provide a higher resolution image. They are small colored or tinted squares as opposed to small dots used in printing.
Pixels
This format is Photoshop’s native format and fully supports all of the powerful features that Photoshop has like layers, masks, channels, paths, and so on. All other formats flatten or merge layers together. Use only while editing or when not importing into another program.
Photoshop Format
Computer memory that can be changed often by the user and is lost each time the computer is turned on.
RAM Random Access Memory
The number of pixels (ppi) or dots (dpi) or lines per inch (lpi) of an image.
Resolution
Red, Green and Blue. Additive primary colors, used to reproduce all color and black-and-white images seen on a computer screen, as opposed to CMYK used to reproduce images seen in print.
RGB
A format for storing photographic images not vector images; the standard format for scanned photographs or illustrations (color) and for exporting grayscale (black-and-white) photographs or illustrations to other programs.
TIFF
Tagged Image File Format.
Object oriented graphics used by drawing programs such as Illustrator. _____ do not require the use of pixels to reproduce the image.
Vector Images
