CompTIA Network Module 1 Flashcards
What is a Network and Computer Network
List the 4 components of Network.
Devices -
Media ( wireless, fibre etc) - means for Devices to connect to each other
Adaptor (eg NIC) - translate btw the diff Devices over the media
Network OS - Manages entire setup( eg resource allocation, monitoring etc)
What is a Node ?
What is endpoint and distribution node ?
Endpoint node - It’s where the data terminates at. ( eg printer, monitor etc)
Redistribution node - pass on data ( eg switch, router, hub)
What is a server ?
A server is a specialized computer or software system designed to provide services, data, or resources to other computers, known as clients, over a network
What is the network backbone ?
Central part of computer network
Interconnect various small networks
Manages majority of network traffic
At high speeds
List 4 types of network backbone
What is terminal ( in context of mainframe )
interface for users to input data and commands, and to receive output from the mainframe
What is a client
Device/software that requests service from other nodes and servers.
What is WAN
It’s a telecommunications network that extends over a large geographic area, designed to connect multiple Local Area Networks (LANs) or other networks
What is Intranet ?
- An intranet is a private, secure network used within an organization to facilitate communication, collaboration, and information sharing among employees.
- Only to authorized users within the organization
What is Extranet ?
Is a controlled private network that allows access to authorized customers.
It extends an organization’s intranet to external users, providing them with access to specific information and applications without exposing the entire network.
What is a segment ?
segment refers to a portion of a computer network that is separated from other parts of the network.
This separation can be achieved using various devices like routers, switches, or firewalls1.
List 3 types of Network Models
Centralised
Client/Server
Peer to Peer
What is topology in networking ?
What is Physical topology ?
What is logical topology in networking ?
List some examples of Network connections.
What is physical bus topology ?
is a network design where all devices (or nodes) are connected to a single central cable, known as the “bus” or “backbone
Signal bounce off at ends (disruptive)
Terminators at ends to kill bounce. 50 ohm terminators
What is a physical star topology ?
network configuration where each node is connected to a central hub or switch
Switch - sends to specific devices.
Hub - broadcast to all devices
What is physical ring topology ?
network configuration where each device is connected to exactly two other devices, forming a continuous loop or ring.
What is physical tree topology ?
network configuration that combines elements of both star and bus topologies. It resembles a tree structure, with a central “root” node connected to one or more intermediate nodes, which in turn connect to other nodes, forming a hierarchy.
What is physical mesh topology ?
Each node connected to multiple nodes creating a web-like structure.
List some examples of hybrid topology.
Star bus hybrid
Star of stars hybrid
Star-Ring hybrid
