Remote Desktop protocol.
TCP 3389
What does windows use instead of FTP?
SMB (server message block), also called CIFS (common internet file system).
TCP 445
What does Apple use instead of FTP?
AFP (Apple filing protocol).
Uses SLP (service location protocol) to find locations/servers.
TCP 427 & UDP 427.

What enhancements does SNMP v3 offer?
Message integrity
Authentication
Encryption
Another name for a hub?
A multi port repeater.
Based on what do today’s switches (and previously hubs) pass on incoming traffic?
The destination MAC address.
What is an ASIC?
Application-specific integrated circuit.
A piece of hardware inside a switch (bridge) that forwards traffic based on data-link address.
What makes a switch a layer-3 switch?
It can route traffic based on the data-link address (layer 2) and the up address (layer 3).
What is a wireless LAN controller?
A device that controls many, even thousands, of WAPs (wireless access points) either with a physical device or in the cloud.
Firewalls typically run on what OSI layer?
Layer 3, because they are often built into routers.
Firewalls route traffic based on what OSI layer?
Layer 4, tcp/UDP.
What is DOCSIS?
Cable internet.
Data over cable service interface specification.
What does ADSL stand for?
Asymmetric digital subscriber line.
What type of connector do landline telephones and POTS services in computers use?
RJ11.
What is a Patch Panel?
A panel of RJ45 Ethernet connections that are run from all the computers in an office into a closet where they can then be connected to whatever switch necessary by running another cable from the patch panel to the desired switch.
What does SOHO stand for?
A small-office home-office.
A SOHO router has many functions all in one.
What do EOP and PLC do?
EoP is Ethernet over Power and PLC is Power Line Communication. It’s a way of connecting to Ethernet using power cables.
Port Forwarding is also called what 2 things?
Destination NAT or Static NAT.
What is whitelisting?
No traffic can pass thru the firewall unless it’s specifically allowed.
What is blacklisting?
Nothing on the “bad list” is allowed.
What is the highest encryption method available (usually) for wireless channels?
WPA2
WPA2-AES
What is 802.11g?
Wireless standard made in 2003, backwards compatible with 802.11a and b and operates at 2.4Ghz.
What is 802.11n?
Wireless standard made in 2009.
2.4GHz or 5GHz.
Total throughout 600 Mbit/s
Faster because of using 4 MIMO (multiple input multiple output).
What is 802.11ac?
Made in 2014, much bigger frequency range than 802.11n, and only operates at 5GHz.
8 separate MIMO streams at the same time (called MU-MIMO, multiple user MIMO).
Total maximum throughput almost 7 Gbit/s.
What 802.11 channels are best to use to avoid overlapping?
Channels 1, 6, 11.
What is Zigbee?
An open standard IEEE 802.15.4 PAN (personal area network, like Bluetooth).
Longer distance than Bluetooth, less power than WiFi.
A mesh network, don’t need one centralized device.

Manage all devices from one pane of glass.
- software, drivers, updates, patches, etc.
