Compounds Precipitation Flashcards
Soluble Substances
Substances which dissolve in particular solvents
Insoluble Substances
Substances which do not dissolve in particular solvents
Solvent
A liquid that a substance dissolves in (usually water)
Solute
Substance dissolved
Solution
Solute in solvent (mixture)
= solute + solvent
Salt
Ionic compound
Salt Solution
Soluble salt dissolved in water
Mixing Two Different Salt Solutions
No reaction : ions in solution remain free and now new compounds are formed.
Reaction : some of the ions join together to form a new compound that is insoluble. This is called a precipitation reaction.
If one of the salts is insoluble, then it will precipitate from the solution

Precipitate
Insoluble compounds formed after mixing two salt solutions
Precipitation Reaction Formula
AB (aq) + CD (aq) –> CB (s) + AD (aq)
- A and C are different metal cations
- B and D are different non-metal cations
- (aq) means substance in aqueous solution
- (s) mean substance is solid (precipitated)

Chemical reactions
- A colour change
- Precipitate forming
- Energy being produced (fizzing, burning)
- An odour being produced
