Compounds, formulae and equations Flashcards
How does a product form in a chemical reaction?
When a chemical reaction occurs, no atoms are created or destroyed. The atoms in the reactants rearrange to form the products
What does aqueous mean?
Dissolved in water
What are ionic equations?
They can be written for an reaction involving ions in solution, where only the reacting ions and the products they form are included
What is a binary compound?
A compound that contains two elements only
How do you name a binary compound?
The name of first element and the name of second element with ending - ide
What is a polyatomic ion?
An ion that contains more than one element bonded together
How are ions created?
When electrons are transferred from one atom to another these ions attract each other due to their opposite charge to form ionic compounds
What kind of ions do group 1 metals form?
+1
What kind of ions do group 2 metals form?
+2
What kind of ions do group 3 metals form?
+3
What kind of ions do group 5 metals form?
-3
What kind of ions do group 6 metals form?
-2
What kind of ions do group 7 metals form?
-1
What is the formula of a nitrate ion?
NO3 -
What is the formula of a sulphate ion?
SO4 2-
What is the formula of a carbonate ion?
CO3 2-
What is the formula of an ammonium ion?
NH4 +
What is the formula of a zinc ion?
Zn 2+
What is the formula of a silver ion?
Ag +
What is the standard reaction between a metal hydroxide and acid?
Salt + water
What are spectator ions?
Ions that don’t take part in the reaction
- They remain the same on both sides of the chemical equations
What is the standard ionic equation for neutralisation?
H+ (aq) + OH- (aq) -> H20 (l)
What are hydrous salts?
Salts with water content in them
What are anhydrous salts?
Salts without water content in them
What should the overall charge in an ionic compound be?
0 so the charges must balance
- The sum of the positive charges= the sum of the negative charges
Do covalent compounds contain ions?
They don’t containn ions
- Most covalent compounds exist as molecules with small number of atoms bonded together
