Binary acids
Hydrofluoric acid (HF(ag)), Hydrochloric acid (HCl(ag)), Hydrobromic acid (Hbr(ag)), Hydrosulfuric acid (H2S(ag))
Bases
Sodium hydroxide (NaOH(ag)), Ammonium hydroxid (NH4OH(ag)), Magnesium hydroxid (Mg(OH)2(ag)), Aluminum hydroxid (Al(OH)3(ag)), Sodium hydrogen carbonate (NaHCO3(ag))
How to count atoms ?
The symbol of an element represent one, if there is a subscript that means that their is more than one (ex, H2O), a subscript on the outside of the element multiples all the elements (ex. 3 H2O)
How to balance chemical equations ?
Balance the metals first, then balance non metals, balance oxygen and hydrogen last, then count the atoms
Sodium phosphate and calcium chloride react to form calcium phosphate and sodium chloride
2 NA3PO4 + 3 CaCl2 -> Ca3(PO4)2 + 6 NaCl
Zinc and lead (II) nitrate react to form zinc nitrate and lead
Zn + Pb(NO3)2 -> Zn (NO3)2 + Pb
What are the common properties of acids and bases?
Conduct electricity and change the colour of litmus paper
What does pH mean?
Power of hydrogen
What do the numbers from 0 to 14 mean in terms of measuring pH ?
0-6.9 = acidic
7 = neutral
7.1-14 = basic
How does red and blue litmus paper change when it is dipped in an aqueous acid ? Or an aqueous base?
Blue turns red, red stays red. Blue stays blue, red turns blue.
What colour does cabbage juice become when mixed with an aqueous acid? Or an aqueous base?
It turns red. It turns a blueish green.
How are acids and bases used in everyday life?
Maintaining a stable internal environment in the human body, baking a cake, or determining whether a lake can support aquatic life.
