chemical reactions Flashcards
What is the Law of Conservation of Mass ?
Any given chemical reaction, the total mass of reactants equals the total mass of the products
A 20g sample of compound A is mixed with 45g of compound B. A chemical reaction occurs in which a gas is produced. Once the reaction is complete, the final mixture has been made. What is the mass of the gas ?
10g
Syntesis
A reaction in which 2 reactants combine to make a product. A + B = AB or Zinc + Sulfur = Zinc Sulfide
Decomposition
A reaction in which a reactant breaks down from 2 (or more) simpler products. AB = A + B or Water = Hydrogen + Oxygen
Single displacement
A reaction in which an element displaces another element in a compound, producing a new compound and a new element. A + BC = AC + B or A + BC = AB + C
Double displacement
a reaction that occurs when elements in different compounds displace each other or exchange places, producing two new compounds. AB + CD = AD + CB or Silver Nitrate + Sodium Chloride = Silver Chloride + Sodium Nitrate
What is the difference between a complete combustion reaction and an incomplete combustion reaction?
If there is enough oxygen complete combustion can occur, but if there is not, carbon monoxide will be released instead causing incomplete combustion.
