Composition and Principles of Design Flashcards
What is composition?
composition is the placement or arrangement of visual elements and principles in a work of art
What are the 4 ways to create a visually intresting composition?
- orientation-excessive shape kills balance
- use odd numbers-more appealing to the human eye
- Rule of thirds-instead of placing objects on the horizon within the centre, shift them side to side
- simplify+focus-achieved by making the main subject the largest
What is balance?
the way elements are arranged to create a feeling of stability in a work of art
What are the 3 types of balance?
- symmetrical balance-the parts of an image are organized so that one side mirrors the other
- aysymmetrical balance-when one side of a composition does not reflect the design of the other
- Radial balance-balance is a circular arrangement
What is variety?
the use of differences and change to increase the visual intrest of the work.
What is emphasis (dominance)?
The focal point of an image, or when one area or thing stands out the most
What is proportion?
The comparative relationship of one part to another with respect to size, quantity, or degree; SCALE.
What is harmony (unity)?
When all the elements and principles work together to create a pleasing image, visually satisfying
What is movement?
Moving viewers eye around composition or creating the illusion that objects are in a work of motion
What is pattern?
Is the repetition or reoccurrence of a design element, exact or varied, that establishes a visual beat
What is repetition?
The repetition of elements of design creates unity within
the work of art, and can create a sense of movement
What is rythm?
A regular repetition of elements to produce the look and feel of
movement.
What are the 3 types of rhythm?
- Progressive: the repeated element(s) changes in some way; a sense of shrinking or expanding is created.
- Static: the repeated element(s) do not change in any way.
- Radial: The repeated element(s) center around one main object, shape or space
What is contrast?
A large difference between two things to create intrest and tension.
