Composites Flashcards
What is a composite material?
When 2 or more materials are bonded
Why are composite materials created?
Improved properties (E.g. Aesthetics)
What is the advantage of using composite materials?
Excellent strength to weight ratio
What is GRP?
Glass Reinforced Plastic
How is GRP manufactured?
Thermosetting plastic resin reinforced with fine glass
Give 2 advantages of GRP
Good strength to weight ratio
Resistant to corrosion
Give 2 disadvantages of GRP
Resin can shatter - Can’t be used in vehicles
Prone to osmosis
What are the stages of manufacturing of GRP?
- High quality mould prepared
- Release agent sprayed into mould
- Gel coat applied to mould
- Glass matting, layers of resin and catalyst placed on mould
- Layering up is done and left to cure overnight
What is carbon fibre?
Thermosetting plastic resin and carbon fibres set on polymer matrix
Why is carbon fibre preferential to GRP?
Much stronger
What are the applications of carbon fibre?
High performance sports and structural applications (e.g. Aircraft, Racing helmets)
What are the stages of manufacturing carbon fibre?
- High quality mould prepared
- Release agent sprayed in mould
- Gel coat applied to mould
- Carbon fibre, layers of resin and catalyst are placed onto mould
- Layering up is done and left to cure overnight
