Composite Flashcards
Where is Mount Pinatubo?
Located at the plate boundary between the Eurasian and Philippine plate and is one of a chain of volcanoes known as the Luzon volcanic arc.
How is the Luzon volcanic arc formed?
The result of the oceanic Philippine plate being sub ducted under the lighter continental Eurasian plate.
What does it give off?
Violent eruptions- huge volcanic rock bombs and sulphur dioxide gas. Pressure builds and released from sides of the cone as well as the summit crater.
Why is the volcano slightly offset from the plate boundary?
The volcano is slightly offset from the plate boundary because when the Oceanic plate is sub ducted it is melted and forced away as molten magma by the high pressures exerted on it.
How are composite volcanoes produced?
Composite volcanoes are a type of landform produced as a result of the building up of layers of alternating lava flow, ash and blocks of unmelted stone that are formed over hundreds of thousands of years through multiple eruptions.
How tall is Mount Pinatubo?
1,486 m tall
What boundaries are they found at?
They are usually found at destructive or compressional boundaries.
What is the type of lava flow?
The eruptions from these volcanoes may be a pyroclastic flow rather than a lava flow.
A pyroclastic flow is a mixture of hot steam, ash, rock and dust.
A pyroclastic flow can roll down the sides of a volcano at very high speeds and with temperatures of over 400°C.
