Componets of BKA Flashcards
Structure of Prosthesis: Endoskeletal
Advantage: cosmetic, light weight, versatile
Disadvantage: less durable than exoskeleton, soft materials disintegrate
Structure of Prosthesis: Exoskeletal
Advantage: durable
Disadvantage: not as versatile or cosmetic as endoskeletal
Suspension: corset with hinge
Advantage: increase weight bearing surface; max M/L stability, decrease shearing of the limb; excellent for collateral ligament weakness
Disadvantages: heavy; not cosmetic; difficult to don
Suspension: Neoprene Sleeve
Advantage: good suspension; hides prostehtic trimline
Disadvantage: difficult to don; skin problems; may be contraindiciated for vascular patients
Suspension: supracondylar supra patellar
Advantage: excellent suspension; increase weight bearing surface; increase M/L stability; provides hyperextension stop
Disadvantage: difficult to kneel; contraindicated with obese or muscular thighs
Suspension: supracondylar infra patellar
Advantage: excellent suspension; improved cosmesis; easy donning
Disadvantage: difficult to achieve good suspension with obese or muscular thighs
Suspension: supracondylar cuff
advantage: good suspension; adjustable
Disadvantage: restrictive; fair M/L stability; difficult to don
Suspension: silicone suspension
Advantage: esxcellent suspension; eliminates piston; sensory feedback
Disadvantage: diffidult to don; dermatological factor; selective patients; durability is in question
Prosthetic Feet: SACH (solid ankle cushioned heel)
ADvantage: cosmetic; low cost and maintenance
Disadvantage: deterioration of soft material; no torque absorption; home ambulation; energy consumption
Prosthetic Feet: single axis
Advantage: smooth push off; enhances prosthetic knee stability
Disadvantage: increased weight; cost and maintenance
Prosthetic Feet: multi axis
Advantage: absorbs torque and shock; accommodates uneven surfaces
Disadvantage: increases weight; cost and maintenance
Prosthetic Feet: Elastic Keel
Advantage: easier ambulation; smooth roll over; increased comfort; reliable
Disadvantage: limited push off; increased cost
Prosthetic Feet: dynamic response
Advantages: smooth gait; very light; cosmetic; less energy expenditure
Disadvantage: increased cost; not recommended for home ambulation
