Components Of The Brain Flashcards
What 3 ways are the functional areas of the brain divided into?
Forebrain
Midbrain
Hindbrain
What does the forebrain consist of?
Cerebrum
Thalamus
Hypothalamus
What is the midbrain divided into?
Nothing, it’s just the midbrain.
What’s the hindbrain divided into?
Cerebellum
Pons
Medulla
What is the brain stem composed of?
Midbrain
Pons
Medulla
What is the brainstem?
A structurally distinct area of the brain, obviously separate from the cerebellum and cerebrum. It’s a useful grouping to use when visualising location and structure but functionally the midbrain is different to the medulla and the pons.
What is the reticular formation?
Very important parts of the brain that control consciousness which run through the brainstem.
What does the midbrain control?
Higher functions than the pons and medulla (eye movements and auditory system)
What does the medulla control?
Very basic functions such as breathing and heart-rate.
What does the pons control?
It has roles in consciousness and posture.
What is the structure of the cerebellum?
It consists of two mounds of folded tissue posterior to the brainstem to which it’s is connected by three peduncles (bands of neurones resembling a stalk) of neural tissue.
What is the role of the cerebellum?
It is concerned mainly with motor functions. It also plays a vital role in motor learning (like riding a bike) as all motor skills are stored in the cerebellum memory.
Where does the cerebellum receive input from?
Ascending sensory pathways from the body and descending motor pathways from the cerebrum and other information from the brainstem.
