Components of the Atom Flashcards
Charge of electron
-1 unit/electron
Charge of proton
+1 unit/proton
Charge of neutron
Neutral
Mass defect
Discrepancy between theoretical mass and actual mass of an atom that represents the mass that was converted to nuclear binding energy
Mass defect formula
E=mc^2
Range of mass defect
Mass defect is less than or equal to one percent of the measured mass for all cases
Isotopes
Atoms that have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons
Natural abundance
The relative amount of the various isotopes on Earth (represented as a_n for the nth isotope)
General formula for average atomic mass
m_x=(a_1)(m_1)+(a_2)(m_2)+…+(a_n)(m_n)
Atomic symbols
(A,Z)X where X is the atomic symbol of the element, A is the mass number (number of protons plus number of neutrons), and Z is the atomic number (number of protons). A is superscript in front of X and Z is subscript in front of X.
