Components Of Kidney Flashcards
The nephron
The functional unit of the kidney.
Contains blood supply, a glomerulus which functions as individual filtering unit and tubules for secretion and absorption of substances.
Blood pathways
Blood leaves the heart - enters abdo aorta - supply’s kidney renal artery divides into branches of arteries = afferent arterials.
Afferent arteriole
Carried blood to the glomerulus where it’s filtered. Leaves through efferent arteriole and is returned via venous system.
What does the glomerulus consist of?
A group of cells with selective permeability. Known as Semi-permeable membrane
What is selective permeability
Certain substances are small enough to cross the membrane whereas bigger blood substances are unable to cross.
Afferent & efferent arterioles
Afferent: Larger lumen = blood flows into the glomerulus faster than it flows out.
Creating a pull of blood in the Bowman’s capsule = a hydrostatic pressure.
What does Hydrostatic pressure do?
Forces fluid to cross the glomerular membrane and enter the tubules.
What is ultrafiltration?
We are hydrostatic pressure forces fluid to cross the glomerular membrane and enter tubules.
Collecting duct and Ureter responsibility
Special cells influence: Absorption of essential electrolytes and excretion of waste products.
Normal glomerulus filtration rate (GFR)
125ml/min
