Component 3 - Fieldwork Exam Flashcards
What is qualitative research ?
Research that collects non-numerical information, instead in some form of text, interviews or images.
What are some methods of qualitative data collection ?
Bipolar and likert surveys, using photographs, images and sketches, environmental quality surveys, sustainable community assessment and retail assessments.
What are the steps for fieldwork research ?
First pose questions, collect data, process and present data, apply wider understanding, draw conclusions and evaluate the process.
What is a bipolar survey ?
Where opposite statements are used at opposite ends of a scale and you agree more closely with one end, can be used to discern different groups’ of peoples different opinions more easily.
What are likert surveys ?
Similar to a bipolar survey - assess the strength of a response to an issue or statement (strongly agree, agree, disagree etc.), and also useful to easily compare different groups of peoples opinions.
What is re-photographing ?
Taking a picture of the same location within a historic image.
What is the purpose of re-photographing ?
Evidences changes to a landscape from historic images, and to demonstrate more recently how town landscapes can differ (shops, roads etc.)
What form of research are photos, sketches and sketch maps ?
Primary research.
What are the advantages of sketch maps and field sketches ?
They only focus on the important features of the landscape.
How can field images be made more useful ?
By adding date, location and information about altitude etc. to increase analytical points.
What could a retail investigation include ?
It could focus on clone towns, a clone town survey could be supplemented by measuring flows of shoppers in and out of independent retail stores and chain stores, and by questionnaires with shoppers about the different shops.
What could a sustainable community assessment include ?
By using bipolar surveys about several aspects of what a sustainable community should include (transport, services, environment, economy, buildings, community) and then giving the area an overall score based on what it achieved for each of these.
What could a retail assessment survey include ?
Similar to a sustainable community survey - but more specific to aspects of retail such as the quality of goods or buildings and the transport links to it - also to determine sustainability but of individual stores.
What are radar graphs ?
Where multiple areas’ ranking in different aspects can be compared, should revolve around a central point where the different locations form around.
How can radar graphs be used ?
To show data collected from qualitative methods where opinions about certain statements or questions are then ranked along a scale and are plotted in radial patterns about a centre.
