Q

What type of fibers does the trigeminal distribute and what are the ganglia for these fibers?

A

Parasympathetic:
postganglionic parasympathetic fibers that have synapsed in the parasympathetic ganglia to their target structures.

Sympathetic
Postganglionic sympathetic fibers from the ciliary and pterygopalatine ganglia.

Q

Describe pathway of ophthalmic nerve (what does it pass through, what does it give off? what does it suspend, what does it carry? )

A

Leaves the middle cranial fossa by travelling through the wall of the cavernous sinus.

It gives off a recurrent meningeal branch (carrying general afferents from the dura of the anterior and posterior cranial fossae) before passing through the superior orbital fissure.

It passes through the orbit, splitting into three main general afferent branches.

It suspends the ciliary ganglion and carries hitchhiking visceral efferents to the smooth muscle of the eye.

Q

What does the lacrimal communicate with and what does it receive from it?

A

Has a communication with the communicating branch from the zygomatic nerve, from which it receives visceral efferents from the pterygopalatine ganglion for the lacrimal gland
