Complicated Cranial Nerves Flashcards
Trigeminal Nerve is the major general afferent for?
Most head (face, teeth, mouth, nasal cavity, orbit, and dura)
Trigeminal Nerve carries some general efferent fibers to which muscles?
muscles of mastication, floor of the mouth
one muscle of the soft palate
one muscle of the middle ear.
Muscles that receive general efferent fibers from trigeminal nerve are all derivates of which branch?
first pharyngeal (mandibular) arch.
Which ganglia does the trigeminal nerve suspend?
ciliary, pterygopalatine, otic and submandibular parasympathetic ganglia.
What type of fibers does the trigeminal distribute and what are the ganglia for these fibers?
Parasympathetic:
postganglionic parasympathetic fibers that have synapsed in the parasympathetic ganglia to their target structures.
Sympathetic
Postganglionic sympathetic fibers from the ciliary and pterygopalatine ganglia.
Trigeminal carries hitchhiking special afferent (taste) fibers from?
anterior 2/3 of the tongue and palate.
What are the three divisions of the trigeminal nerve?
- Ophthalmic
- Maxillary
- Mandibular
Describe pathway of ophthalmic nerve (what does it pass through, what does it give off? what does it suspend, what does it carry? )
Leaves the middle cranial fossa by travelling through the wall of the cavernous sinus.
It gives off a recurrent meningeal branch (carrying general afferents from the dura of the anterior and posterior cranial fossae) before passing through the superior orbital fissure.
It passes through the orbit, splitting into three main general afferent branches.
It suspends the ciliary ganglion and carries hitchhiking visceral efferents to the smooth muscle of the eye.
What does the lacrimal communicate with and what does it receive from it?
Has a communication with the communicating branch from the zygomatic nerve, from which it receives visceral efferents from the pterygopalatine ganglion for the lacrimal gland
Describe pathway of supratrochlear nerve
exits the orbit onto the face medial to the supra-orbital branch
What does the supratrochlear nerve carry and from where?
general afferents from the middle part of the forehead, anterior part of the scalp, and upper eyelid.
Describe pathway of supra-orbital nerve
exits the orbit onto the face via the supra-orbital notch/foramen
What does the supra-orbital nerve carry and from where?
general afferents from the forehead, anterior part of the scalp, upper eyelid, and frontal sinus.
Name a difference between locations from where of supra-orbital and supratrochlear get general afferents
Supra-oribtal nerve also carries GA from frontal sinus
Nasociliary nerve GA from where?
the contents of the orbit, superior part of the nasal cavity, ethmoidal air cells, sphenoidal sinus, dura of the anterior cranial fossa, and superficial sensation from the dorsum of the nose.
