It is looking to a group for guidance if the situation is ambiguous.

what is the difference between conformity and obedience?
Obedience occurs when you are told to do something (authority), whereas conformity happens through social pressure (the norms of the majority).

foot in the door (once you start you feel obliged to continue)
gradual commitment (small task that gradually increases)
agentic shift (somebodies agent)
the role of buffers (if there is a barrier between you and the goal)
legitimate authority (somebody having a right to tell you what to do)
