Q

Grammar Le Use

A

Verbal suffix In the example below, is put after the verb to indicate that the action of the verb is completed: Wáng xiānsheng, jié hūn le ma? If he was married the answer would be: Jié hūn le, if not: the construction would be Méi + verb where the yǒu may be omitted. The verb may be omitted when answering a question with le in the negative but yǒu must then be retained, so the response could have been: Méi yǒu jié hūn or Méi jié hūn There is no completed action in the negative so there is no le

Grammar èr and liǎng
Liǎng (two of a kind) is used with measure words instead of èr, so two children is liǎng gè xiǎoháir not èr gè xiǎoháir. Some people find it helpful to think of liǎng as the bound form 'two of a kind'. Liǎ (an abbreviated form of liǎng gè) is often used with personal pronouns 'we', 'you', 'they' instead of liǎng gè, thus 'the two of us' may be either wǒmen liǎ or wǒmen liǎng gè

62
Grammar Question words and their position
Question words such as jǐ, duōshao, shénme, shénme shíhou, shéi, nǎr, jǐ diǎn, zěnmeyàng appear in a sentence in the same position as the word that replaces them in the answer eg Tǎmen jǐ suì? - how old are they Nánháir shísì suì, nǚháir jiǔ suì (nb no verb is necessary when stating age in terms of years) Tā zài nǎr?
