Complete dentures opposed by natural teeth Flashcards
What negative effects can presence of natural teeth opposing edentulous ridge have?
Trauma - high force levels against edentulous ridge
Instability of denture
Combination syndrome
What effects does a flabby/ fibrous ridge have on a denture?
Tissue displacing during impression
Tipping of prosthesis
What is combination syndrome?
Associated with flabby ridge
Generally when there is an edentulous maxilla and they only have lower 3-3 (anterior) teeth.
All the biting force is on the upper 3-3 ridge, so the bone resorbs and mucosa thickens, resulting in a flabby ridge.
How can you reduce trauma to the maxillary denture-bearing area?
Maximise coverage of denture-bearing area by the prosthesis
Ensure prosthesis covers the primary load bearing sites
How to improve stability of the maxillary denture?
Optimum border seal
Effective post-dam
Full upper denture in centric occlusion - even contacts on both sides
What are the solutions for overbite of upper complete to lower natural incisors?
Reduction of the incisal edges of the natural teeth - not always possible due to sensitivity
Re-site the upper denture teeth - putting them higher up - see less upper denture teeth
May improve the function but compromise on aesthetics
What happens if there is no posterior support?
Anterior teeth in contact/ opposition
Denture drops down when eating if only got lower anterior opposing maxillary denture
What is the effect of irregular occlusal plane on stability of maxillary denture?
Trauma to upper residual ridge due to uneven contacts
