Complementary And Alternative Medicines (CAM) Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 3 problems associated with CAM supplements?
A
- Contamination: mixed with poisonous chemicals unknowingly
- Adulteration: change toxic form once mixed with western drugs
- Misidentification: recognise wrong natural herbal drug, use toxic version instead
2
Q
MOAs of garlic?
A
- Blocks cholesterol synthesis by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase
- Interferes with platelet aggregation —> inhibits clot formation
- Dilates blood vessels —> increase arterial elasticity —> lowers blood pressure
3
Q
ADRs of garlic?
A
- GIT related: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, flatulence
- Burning sensation in mouth
4
Q
DDIs with garlic?
A
- Don’t take with blood thinners (aspirin, warfarin)
- Increase breakdown in patients with anti-HIV drugs
5
Q
MOA of Gingko biloba?

Q
MOA of St John Wort?
A
- Antidepressant: Inhibits MAO and reuptake of serotonin, NE, dopamine —> increase neurotransmitter levels at synapse
